WHY ARE HANUMAN IDOLS COVERED WITH SINDOOR ?

One day Hanuman saw Sita applying Sindoor (Vermilion) in her hair. He asked Sita why she was applying Sindoor. Sita replied that it was for long life and well being of Shri Rama, her husband. Hanuman who was an ardent devotee of Shri Ram thought – if a pinch of sindoor in the hair can ensure long life for Shri Ram, why shouldn’t he apply sindoor on his entire body. Hanuman then applied sindoor all over his body for Rama’s long life. Seeing Hanuman’s innocence and love, Shri Ram gave him a blessing that whenever there will be a mention of devotion, Hanuman‘s name will come first. Also, Shri Ram gave a boon to all his devotees that whoever would apply sindoor to Hanuman idol and observe worshiping Hanuman with sindoor will have a long and happy life, and all their wishes will be fulfilled. This is the reason why Hanuman idols are covered with sindoor. Sindoor is mixed in oil or ghee and applied to the entire body of Lord Hanuman. Til (Sesame) oil or Chameli (Jasmine) oil is generally used.
